He's a frightening looking ghoul, but needs some life brought into him. This is where you come in. Register now for Monster Makeup Wars and Ms Scary Midwest

MHC is now accepting applications to participate in our two most popular events.

The Bloody Mary Monster Makeup Wars pits fives teams of three artists against each other. Each team is challenged to create the scariest, most creative, monster from the neck up. There is one catch though. They do not know what materials they have to work with until the contest starts and they only have 30 minutes to do it in! If you feel you are up to the challenge submit your application now. We will accept applications through April 16th at which point the five teams will be chosen at random.

Each year the Ms Scary Midwest Pageant searches for the scariest female character. Eight lucky "ladies" will vie for this prestigious award onstage during the Saturday Masquerade Ball. These eight will be selected from all entries, submitted by April 16th, by a panel of judges from around the haunt industry.

It seems like this year the Transworld Haunt Show has a bit of an identity crisis. It's not sure if it wants to focus on Haunted Attractions or the Halloween industry. To top it off it now is featuring items for waterparks. Hopefully next year's show won't suffer in quality because it's trying to please the amusement park, Halloween and Haunt industry instead of focusing its efforts on just haunts which was it's original intention. Pilot for Network TV

We have a surprise for you! We’ve been sitting on this for a couple months, but its time to let the cat out of the bag… Post Time Productions will be videotaping the entire weekend at the Midwest Haunters Convention. They are shooting a pilot for several TV networks. They’ll be taping the parties, trade show, contests and classes. They’ll edit this down to a 30 minute TV show that the networks have expressed an interest in. The program highlights strange and unusual conventions in America. We’re honored they chose our convention to feature in the pilot. Why the MHC? For the past three years; our Saturday night masquerade party has been featured on AOL’s top 13 Freaky Attractions. Also they watched the nearly dozen vides on MySpace highlighting MHC and the unusual activities at our show. Here’s your chance to appear on national television! Bring your best costume/character to the MHC.

Hearse Parking

The area where we parked hearses last year is under construction. Hearse parking options include valet parking in front of the hotel for $23 per day. Everyone entering the Hyatt will see the cars; as people walk/drive by. Alternative parking options include a nearby parking garage at $10 per day or open surface lots at $7 - $8 per day. The new owner's name is John Kennedy who owns a publishing company known as Haunted Things outside of Cincinnati, OH. While Leonard Pickel may not be the owner anymore He still has a huge impact on the magazine. He's the editor in chief of Haunted Attraction Magazine and still plays a vital rule in its success.The magazine and website seems to be heading in the right direction with John Kennedy's help. He's open to suggestions and ideas on how to improve both the site and magazine and hopefully changes are made for the better.

This item will be one of the SPECIAL raffle items with money gong to Kathryn DeSautell. Another raffle item will be an ORIGINAL GRANDPA MUNSTER DOLL from 1964, signed by Al in Gold. Item was given to Jen Sharlow when she was Al Lewis' personal assistant.

The Haunted Attraction Industry joins the fight against breast cancer. Some of the most prominent names that make “Scary” their business are pulling every skeleton out of the ground to raise money for Nancy Allen, a fellow Haunter/pervious Haunt Owner. Allen, who is also known as “Elmyra, the Hearse Chic”, was misdiagnosed in August 2008 with doctors stating “only a Cyst”. On December 25th, Allen was diagnosed with Stage 3 Cancer, causing her to have one breast removed with no insurance.

The Official Drive, “Haunters for Hooters”, will take place at Midwest Haunters Convention in Columbus, Ohio June 13-15th. NANCY ALLEN BATTLES BREAST CANCER

Nancy Allen or “Elmyra the Hearse Chick” is known for her outlandish impersonations of Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. Also a past Haunt owner/operator, Nancy ran Sturdy Pumpkins Haunted Acres in Michigan. The Haunt was a daytime pumpkin patch and Haunted Attraction. Nancy has been a loyal friend to the Haunted Attraction industry for years and is an avid hearse enthusiast.

Nancy now faces the Scariest fight of her life. In August, Nancy went to the hospital to have a lump in her breast evaluated. She was told “nothing to worry about it is just a fibroid cyst”. On Christmas, she was re-evaluated and Diagnosed with Breast Cancer.

On January 25th, 2008, Nancy had her right breast removed. Nancy did well in surgery, but the wait for the lab results was excruciating. Her fears were confirmed when she received the lab reports back. The tumor was golf ball size and in 28 lymph nodes, putting her in a Stage 3 cancer. (There are four stages of cancer)

Stage 3 breast cancer is divided into 3 groups:

Stage 3A means
Although no tumor is seen in the breast, the lymph nodes under the arm contain cancer cells and are stuck together, but there is no sign of cancer spread or
The tumor is 5 cm or less, the lymph nodes in the armpit contain cancer cells and are stuck to each other, but the cancer has not spread elsewhere or
The tumor is more than 5 cm, the lymph nodes in the armpit contain cancer cells and may be stuck together, but there is no further spread

Stage 3B means
The tumor is fixed to the skin or chest wall, the lymph nodes may or may not contain cancer cells, but there is no further spread

Stage 3C means
The tumor can be any size and has spread to lymph nodes in the armpit and under the breast bone, or to nodes above or below the collarbone, but there is no further spread

Nancy was adopted, and found out from her birth mother that Breast cancer runs in their family. With a fear cancer would develop in her left breast, Nancy asked the surgeon to do a double mastectomy. He refused.

Chemo has started, and Nancy lost chunks of hair after her first treatment. This would be devastating to any woman. Through her tears, she decided to not let the cancer take over her life and shaved her head. She now enjoys purple wigs.

Nancy had a shunt put it to help make giving the chemo easier, but it has been a painful process. Her bone depression also set in, which means every bone in her body is in horrible pain. This will eventually disappear.

After her Chemo treatments, Nancy will have to move on to 36 weeks of Radiation. When the radiation treatments are done, Nancy will be able to find a plastic surgeon to rebuild her right breast.

Nancy now lives in Fairmount, Indiana (birthplace of James Dean). She has no insurance and is unemployed. The money she brings in is through EBay auctions, which she runs. Although the Cancer Society has taken care of a lot of the bills, there is a lot they cannot pay for.

Nancy’s bills for over the counter medications, travel to and from the doctor’s daily visits, wigs and daily living are over the top. Nancy also will have to pay the plastic surgeon to rebuild her right breast and fix the left one to “Match”. Right now, she longs for a silicone breast she could wear, and still enjoy playing her role of “Elmyra the Hearse Chick”. They are, unfortunately too expensive. Nancy is also in need of a newer Hearse, as she literally has duct tape holding her current one together. (It is her daily driver).

The Haunted Attraction industry is not really an industry, but more of a family. Right now, one of our family members is in need of our help. Team Halloween, Midwest Haunters Convention, Scream Queen Marketing, and Apollyon Creations has offered to step in and help raise money for Nancy.

The Eastern Haunters Convention is proud to announce that we have signed a three-year agreement with Halloween industry leader Larry Kirchner. This agreement will firmly place HauntWorld as the official and exclusive magazine of the Eastern Haunters Convention for the years 2008, 2009, and 2010, and will make Mr. Kirchner's Haunted House Association (HHA) the official Halloween and Haunted House Association of the Convention for the years 2008, 2009, 2010. HHA will be the exclusive Halloween and Haunted House Association of the Convention for the years 2009 and 2010.

Larry Kirchner is the President and CEO of HauntWorld Magazine, the current #1 subscription based magazine for the Halloween and Haunted Attraction Industry. The 5th Annual Haunted Attraction National Tradeshow and Convention, (better known as HAuNTcon) moves this year to the Houston Crown Plaza Hotel, April 24-28, 2008, with a pre-show Haunt Tour “road trip” April 22- 24. Designed by Haunters, for Haunters, HAuNTcon is a convention and expo that packs every waking moment (maximum 24 hours per day) with everything a Haunter could possibly want or need to make the next Halloween season the best it can be!

Open to all Haunters at every age and level of experience. The 2008 extravaganza will be sponsored by FREEK Energy Drink, Wristband Resource and Haunted Attraction Magazine. HAuNTcon brings together people who love Haunted Houses and Halloween for a fun filled four days and nights of Haunter Education, Tours of Local Haunted Houses, jam packed Tradeshow Floor, Hearse Rally, Haunted Garage Sale and an incredible Costume Ball!

Haunt Tours

The first stop is The 13th Gate Haunted House on Tuesday April 22 in Baton Rouge. Owned and operated by Dwayne Sanburn, The 13th Gate is one of the most detailed Haunts you will ever see. “I have been to some of the best detailed Haunts in the country,” explains Leonard. “Rocky Point, Netherworld, Verdun Manor, but The 13th Gate is an over the top experience.” The queue line space is themed as a barrel-vaulted underground maintenance area. There is even an old work bench with antique tools, placed as if someone had just set them down. “The attraction has Disney level detail and set design,” describes Leonard. “With a built-in effect designed to scare the 100 unsuspecting souls waiting in line for the Haunt to start!” Bring your cameras, for the Lights-on tour that will take place on Wednesday morning.

Next on the tour is a trip to Myrtles Plantation, know as one of the most Haunted places in the US. If you have ever thought of using a plantation theme for your Haunt, this is a great way to see the real thing, up close. Visitors will tour the plantation and house. We will attempt to conjure up real spirits before heading to New Orleans, one of the most Haunted cities in the United States.

Now in its third year of operation, Chamber of Horrors is the next Haunt on the tour. Creative scares and great detail will be the highlight of this backstage tour. Our hosts, Gaston Dupuy and Eddie Dupuy will be on hand to answer questions and show attends around the attraction.

The most radical Haunt on the pre-show tour will be The House of Shock. Closed after hurricane Katrina, this in your face experience has been rebuilt in a new location that allowed a total redesign for the infamous attraction. “When I began Haunting, I turned away from all things Satanic.” recalls Leonard. “Still I was accused of ‘doing the devil’s work,’ just because I owned a Haunted House.” The House Of Shock, takes an opposite approach and embraces the “dark side” of Haunting. “I think Ross Karpleman and Steve Joseph, took this public attitude as a challenge, and themed their Haunt as a fight between good and evil, where good wasn’t always so good and evil always won!” “One great thing about the new House of Shock is that the theme of the attraction is New Orleans,” relates Leonard. “The Haunt starts out in an above ground cemetery, winds through the French Quarter, and even visits the sewers of this home of Voodoo.” The pre-show stage show, which stars Ross, is a pyrotechnic extravaganza... Bring your sun screen!

After what will most likely be a late night on Bourbon Street, the next morning’s adventure will be optional, but worth getting up for. Within walking distance from the hotel are Haunted sites and cemeteries, one of which has the remains of the Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau!

The last Haunt included in the pre-show tour will be The Mortuary. As seen in the Discovery channel special, this year-round Paranormal Research Center, built in a haunted funeral parlor, in the middle of a cemetery, has a Haunted Attraction in the basement. Our host Jeff Borne will be on hand for the tour and let us in on the exciting plans he has for this unbelievable building!

But we are not done Haunting yet! Once back in Houston, attendees can choose to attend the Thursday night Haunt tour of Nightmare on the Bayou. Our host, Bob Wright, will be cooking up a Texas style “Choke and Puke,” for attendees. This dinner and social will include a lights off tour of this large Haunted Attraction in North Houston filled with great actors, great scares and 3D section.

After a full day of HAuNTcon Education and Tradeshow, The Friday Night Haunt Tour will be of Phobia 290. (See Cover Story, this issue!) Three of the five attractions at this multi-element, hard core, animated haunt will feature full actor tours and one additional Haunt will be available for lights on tours and photos.

For those staying over for the new Monday workshops, HAuNTcon will be offering a Bonus Sunday Night Tour and social at the National Museum of Funeral History. This is a great opportunity to discuss the convention, unwind with Haunter friends over a bite to eat and check out the antique hearses, antique coffins and antique embalming equipment in this beautiful museum. Exhibits include a 1900’s casket factory, Civil War embalming and a replica of President Lincoln’s funeral train.

Convention and Exposition
The HAuNTcon Education starts early on Friday April 25 at the Houston Crown Plaza Hotel. The Haunt Ed sessions are divided into four threads; Haunting Business, Creative, Demonstration, and Make-N-Take! Last year was the first time Make-N-Take workshops were offered at HAuNTcon and they were a huge success, selling out early. This year there will be more sessions and the ability to sign up on the web site so we can repeat the popular sessions.

For the first time, HAuNTcon is expanding its already vast Haunter Education with full day paid workshops on Monday April 28. Midwest Fantasy Show

The Midwest Fantasy Show (MFS) is a weekend event, June 13-15, 2008 in Columbus Ohio, planned for family entertainers including professional Makeup Artists, Face and Body Painters, Airbrush Artists, Henna, Magicians, Balloon Twisters, and more. The Midwest Fantasy Show features education designed to appeal to a variety of audiences including artists, entertainers and business owners. The Midwest Fantasy Show is sponsored by Wolfe Face Art and FX and is held in conjunction with the Midwest Haunters Convention.

The Midwest Fantasy Show will host a Halloween Fantasy Body Art Fashion Show on Saturday night sponsored by Sophisticated Terror Productions. Additional evening activities will feature the International Association of Haunted Attractions Masquerade Party with dancing, food, costume contests and the infamous Ms Midwest Scary Pageant. These events combine professional elements of horror, fantasy and fun and are quite sensational to observe!

Baxter Avenue Morgue Gets New Creative Director!

One of the nation's most infamous haunts has new ownership. Joey Arena (Creative Director) and his wife Verity Jones has separated. In doing so Joey took the password for 13bats.com with him and now the new website for the Baxter Avenue Morgue is www.baxtermorgue.com. For a month Verity Jones took the job as creative director. Well she stepped down after a month and now there is a new director. Currently Joey and Verity are in the works of creating their own attraction called Otherworld. Midwest Haunters Convention 2008, June 13 - 15

Midwest Haunters Convention 2008 will take place at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. There will be over 80 vendors in the massive 25,00 sq feet showroom. Scareparts will be returning as the head sponsor with a mini haunted house showcasing their props on the tradeshow floor. The tradeshow will be open Saturday, June 14 and Sunday, June 15 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. General admission to the trade show will continue to be free.

The IAHA Board of Directors is happy to report that IAHA and IAAPA have reached an agreement for the benefit of Haunted Attraction Members of both associations.

The International Association of Haunted Attractions (IAHA – www.iahaweb.com) and The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA – www.iaapa.org) will work together to offer benefits to haunted attraction operators. “Since both our organizations serve haunted attraction owners and operators, this arrangement just made sense,” said IAAPA Executive Vice President Susan Mosedale. “We are confident members of both organizations will benefit.” Many of IAHA’s members already attend the IAAPA Attractions Expo, which will be held this year in Orlando, FL from November 12 -16. “As a result of this arrangement, IAHA members attending this year’s IAAPA trade show will see many benefits,” said Ken Donat, IAHA Tradeshow Committee Chair.

IAAPA will offer IAHA members a free trial membership valid from July 1, 2007 through December 31, 2007 (A $495 value). This membership will entitle all IAHA members to attend the IAAPA Attractions Expo 2007 in Orlando this November for the member rate of $80 (compared to the non-member price of $190). IAHA members will also be able to attend the Attractions Management School at the member price of $210 (compared to the non-member price of $335) and the workshop sessions for free (compared to the non-member price of $285).
On Thursday, November 15, IAAPA will host a behind the scenes tour of Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights. This event is open to all IAAPA and IAHA members. Not only will IAHA members receive the discounted IAAPA member price of $65, but IAHA members will also be given the first opportunity to register for this “limited availability” event.

“Universal’s Halloween Horror Night’s is one of the nation’s most respected haunted attractions,” said IAHA Marketing Director Brett Bertolino. “I am extremely excited that this agreement will allow our members to tour this extraordinary attraction during the off-season. Like the chance to see the Netherworld Haunted House at IAAPA's Attractions Expo in Atlanta last year, this is an opportunity not to be missed!”

The company that brought us the incredible Rock Monster animatronic returns with some unique animated characters that are sure to make some say, How did they do that? I'm just in awe by the quality of these props based on the videos on their site. Have you ever seen an animatronic simulate a door being destroyed with massive dents and then return to normal? I didn't think so. Some other amazing props they offer is a falling wooded timber entrance way, a realistic moving shark, a realistic morgue facade and much much more. This company is pretty amazing and it's flown under the radar a little due to it not having separate companies. Now it dose and they are better than ever. Rumor Mill: FearFest A No Show For 2007.

Kings Island FearFest in Mason, OH is known as one of the largest Halloween events in the country. Think of a tamer version of Knott's Scary Farm Halloween Haunt and you get a good idea of what FearFest has to offer. Well, the Cincinnati tradition may be ending this year if the rumors are true. The rumor is that FearFest won't be returning this year and that their props have been sold to another Southern theme park. Could Cedar Point obtain all of their props to add to their annual Fall haunt, HallowNights or is this just a rumor. Ever since Cedar Parks took over ownership of Kings Island their have been drastic changes. First they got rid of WinterFest and now FearFest may be tomorrow's news. We'll keep you up to date if anything develops.

The convention known as Haunt X: Extreme Halloween Expo is for sale. Apparently they are having problems that beyond their control and they will be selling the rights to the name, the domain names surrounding Haunt X, the history and also all the assets that we have associated with it. It honestly looks like the convention got too big for its britches and got out of control to the point where it was unmanageable. What started out as Death Fest, a small gathering, is now another convention that has met its match.

Incredible Haunted Attraction Effects For Cheap

Recently I was browsing the internet and came upon a site that sells some pretty unique effects that can easily be added to a scene to make it come to life. The company is called Outrageous Media and what they've invented is pretty ingenious and very effective when added to a scene. Essentially they sell videos that run for hours and when you place a TV in or outside of a window it makes it appear as if it's part of that room or scene. You can also make borders to fit around the TV to make it look like a picture that is framed. Outrageous-Media has some incredible products and while some companies sell similar products you won't find them at these prices.

2007 Transworld Has Come and Gone!!

2007 was the first year we had ever decided to drive out to Chicago for the annual Transworld Halloween and Haunt Convention. We left Cincinnati, OH at 3am in the morning and drove and drove and drove. We got lost a little on the way, but we finally made it to downtown Chicago around 10 am and realized that Chicago was an hour behind so we were right on time. We slowly entered into the convention center and it was packed. We went up to the advanced registration booth to get our tote bag with all the goodies inside. Inside of the tote bags was the badge holder with pen and note pad, a Kazoobie, convention directory and more free items. Well , of course I was going to take some pictures while at the convention, so I was off to the show office to pick up my press pass. It was there and I walked out of the office with my badge around the neck and my press pass pinned to my hoodie. We first entered the Halloween, Party and Costume section on the bottom floor, but soon decided to walk up stairs to the Haunt Show.

The Haunt Show is a totally different atmosphere compared to the Halloween section. It's a lot more hectic with flashing lights, plenty of fog and animatronics galore. We checked out all the booths and took plenty of flyers, business cards and free goodies. But what I was most excited about was the Dark Zone. The Dark zone is an area of the convention where prop companies and glow in the dark Halloween products are shown off in complete darkness. My favorite new product of the show can be seen in The Dark Zone, but you'll have to check it out in the photo section. The haunt section of the show was a sensory overload and next we went downstairs for the Halloween, Costume and Party show.

The Halloween area of the show takes on a more business like atmosphere and includes everything from Mardi gra beads to Christmas decorations. Many products related to Halloween and Haunted Houses that aren't part of the haunt show can be found in the Halloween, Party and Costume Show. We stayed for about 3 hours and decided to check in at the hotel. Well ,it was only 11:45 and check in time was at 2:00 so we decided to get a bite to eat at the McDonald's right across from Giordano's Pizza. We had a quick bite and were off to the hotel. We checked in early and later that night would attempt to visit Dream Reapers Haunted House. Unfortunately the snow storm didn't want us to go. But luckily we were able to get some Giordano's pizza. It was different, but nothing can compare to Cincinnati pizza. Saturday flew by and Sunday morning was upon us.

We got up around 10:30 packed our bags and were off to the Donal E.Stephens Convention Center. We arrived around 11:00 and tried to take as many photos and get as many free items as possible. The 3 hours we were there flew by and we were ready to drive back to Cincinnati, OH. The 2007 Transworld convention was awesome and Las Vegas here we come!!

This year The Midwest Haunters Convention has switched locations. It will be at the Holiday Inn I270-Worthington in Columbus, OH from July 13-15. The Midwest Fantasy Show will share the show floor and bring a new dimension to The Midwest Haunters Convention. This year's social activities and seminars include the following:
